When the piano pieces op. 118 became known to Brahms's contemporaries, they were thrilled. Clara Schumann was one of the first to get acquainted with the new works and attested to the pieces "in the smallest possible amount of an abundance of sensation". Philipp Spitta aptly said that the works are "right for slow absorption in silence and loneliness".
